Eastern Sequence and Informatics Hub

The Eastern Sequence and Informatics Hub (EASIH) provides next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics for researchers to enable them to utilise this crucial 21st-century research approach in their studies.

In addition to supporting the use of High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) in scientific research, EASIH has a research development and strategic aim to apply HTS to routine medical diagnostic uses, in particular in HLA typing in transplantation and cord blood stem cells, and re-sequencing of disease genes in collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant and NHS Regional Clinical Genetics Services.

EASIH at present can provide sequencing on the Roche 454 FLX, AB Lifetech SOLiD4 and Illumina GAIIx platforms. We can offer mate paired reads, single or paired end reads and multiplexing if you have a large number of samples. Some of the sequencing applications that we can offer are:

  • Whole genome resequencing
  • Variation detection
  • Targeted resequencing
  • mRNA-seq
  • ChIP-seq
  • De novo assembly
  • Small RNA discovery and quantitation of known small RNAs and novel transcripts.
  • Methylation/epigenetics

The sequencing projects run at EASIH are supported by an experienced team of bioinformaticians to help with the analysis and interpretation of the data. Whether you have your own bioinformaticians and just want the data or have no experience of analysing next generation sequencing data we can help get the most out of your experiment.

Core Biomedical Assay Laboratory

CPA accredited, state-of-the-art facilities, offering low-cost, high-quality assays for clinical research studies. The principal focus is on the development of immunoassays for biomarkers in studies of pathophysiology/experimental medicine. Large scale epidemiological work will be reviewed on an individual basis.

CBAL offers:

  • a quality service. Wherever possible assays will be standardised using IFCC approved reference preparations. Quality control samples will be run in each assay. Our three auto-analysers are well-maintained and are covered by service contracts. Assay protocols and quality control data are available on request
  • a wide range of assays available now using various immunoassay formats, including: electrochemical luminescence (ECL) time resolved fluorescence (DELFIA), and ELISA
  • a newly-refurbished laboratory a service run by experienced NHS biomedical scientists proven track record for development of assays not currently in our repertoire.

The Cambridge NIHR Genomics CoreLab provides access to state-of-art microarray technologies from Affymetrix and Agilent and covers a broad range of whole-genome applications including genetic, epigenetic and transcriptomic research. We also offer bioinformatics services to help users to get the most out from the large-scale datasets generated by the instruments. Assistance and advice can provided with other techniques including nucleic acid extraction and quality control, sequencing and real-time PCR used in validation studies, and liquid handling automation which will soon be available.

Biorepository

This is a facility for smart storage, retrieval and rearraying of samples prior to high throughput measurements is being established as a collaboration between the NIHR Cambridge BRC, the MRC Epidemiology Unit and the University of Cambridge. The University has provided the space, with the costs of refurbishment and capital coming from NIHR Cambridge BRC and the MRC Epidemiology Unit. This facility will be overseen by a management committee with representation from NIHR Cambridge BRC, the University and MRC and will be run on a cost recovery basis by the partners.
